Type 2 Diabetes and the FASTer Way To Fat Loss Program

Type 2 Diabetes

What is Type 2 Diabetes:
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how the body metabolizes sugar. It is characterized by a progressive loss of sensitivity to insulin, the pancreatic hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. In the early stages of type 2 diabetes, the body produces more insulin to try to overcome reduced insulin sensitivity, however, in the long run, the pancreas can’t produce enough insulin to maintain blood sugar levels, resulting in high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia induces oxidative stress which, in turn, contributes to many of the complications of type 2 diabetes, such as kidney, nerve, retinal, and vascular damage. The disease process is driven by several diet and lifestyle factors, oxidative stress and genetics and can not be assigned to a single cause.

Here are the habits and behaviours that lead to oxidative stress, damage pancreatic beta cells which are responsible for making insulin, and induce cellular insulin resistance contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes:
  • Nutrient poor diet, Western Diet or Standard American Diet
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Inadequate sleep, circadian rhythm disruption
  • Chronic stress
  • Poor gut health
  • Environmental toxins
  • Nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin D, magnesium, b12, folate
When someone has Type 2 Diabetes they can definitely do the program, and see amazing benefits from it.

Strategies such as:
- Low Carb days
- Intermittent fasting
- Glycogen depletion
- Strength training and HIIT

These strategies could improve insulin resistance. In addition, emphasizing whole food nutrition with an emphasis on gluten- and dairy-free could improve systemic inflammation and oxidative stress.

A growing body of scientific research indicates lower carbohydrate diets are superior to high carbohydrate diets for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. With the FASTer Way to Fat loss we have specific days where we are low carb days, low macros days and reg macro days.

We recommend high quality, high soluble fiber based foods to meet carbohydrate goals for clients with Type 2 diabetes.

It is important to also take into account what our other habits and behaviors related to sleep and stress are. These play a role in how our bodies work optimally. If one area isn't working properly then it is a ripple affect to our system.

Generally with someone with Type 2 Diabetes we like to start them off on regular Macro days:
- 25% of calories from protein
- 30% of calories from fat
- 45% of calories from carbohydrates.

This changes if someone has glucose tolerance issues, insulin resistance, and obesity, eating 45% of calories from carbohydrates might be too high for blood sugar regulation so we would make some changes. Each persons scenario can change everything. That is why we design it based on many different factors.
